After moving to Bristol from his hometown Winchester for University, film student Adam Wickens started DJing and producing under the alias Admin, a name he adopted after admittedly spending too many hours staring at his PC start up screen. What the young producer may lack in years, Admin certainly makes up for in musical prowess. Since migrating to Bristol, he has become a valuable member of the city’s infamous underground scene, making regular DJ appearances at recognised parties across Bristol including Piff and Apex, steadily asserting himself as a must-see name on each local line-up he graces.
Music has been a life long interest for the Admin, with his first foray into the industry playing the jazz trumpet throughout his childhood. He may have now ditched the trumpet, but Admin’s jazz education remains a welcomed feature in his productions, which all possess a distinct sense of warmth, soul and charisma. Aside from jazz, Admin cites an eclectic mix of influences including classic Detroit and Chicago house, Berlin techno and disco as major influences on his style. The result? Smooth, seductive and cerebral house tracks that have seen releases from esteemed labels such as Futureboogie, Glasgow Underground and Chasing Unicorns. Admin’s sensual, slow house track ‘Looking Through’ has also garnered support from top underground music publication XLR8R, and he has even been featured on the Radio 1 Xtra feature Xtra Talent.
Admin’s rare and refreshing combination of undeniable talent, creativity and a genuine, raw enthusiasm for music confirm him as one to watch for the future. After a recent European and Glastonbury debut, Admin’s path to electronic destruction is well underway, with 2013 looking set to be a monumental year for the producer. It almost seems selfish to keep this local gem out of the spotlight he is so capable of conquering.
